Den Haag Parasite       2007

The Den Haag Parasite was part of  “Der Overkant”, an exhibition which showcased contemporary Australian sculpture. Located within the Lange Voorhout in central Den Haag, the work reconstructed a police surveillance box in full view of two other authentic boxes outside the British and American Embassies. The replicated box was linked via an umbilical electrical cord to a car through which power was sourced to operate video and sound equipment within the parasite. This equipment played to the street, via a translucent window, a film made by Goodwin of his access to all the surrounding buildings. This journey was audaciously made with a hidden camera to test the “porosity” of the surrounding area to penetration by the pedestrian. The work was an effective critique of both the structures of surveillance and their effect on public space and our ability as city dwellers to continue to explore private space searching for public spaces hidden within, despite the age of terror.
